Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West

Before they got all famous, they put out what is far and away their best album. That album is this album.

Warhorse - As Heaven Turns To Ash

DOOM
DOOM DOOM
HEAVY
HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY

Earthless - Sonic Prayer

This album consists of two 20 minute long stoner rock jams. The first is the rockier of the two, heavy on the grooving bass, pounding drums, and wailing guitar solos. The second is more psychedelic, with a much slower tempo and building around a single theme. At times the second track has an almost Grails-ish feel to it.

Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague

New Cannibal Corpse. They're still playing death metal, in case you were wondering.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain

Two piece noise rock band. They sound exactly like the cover looks like.

Tower of Rome - All Is Lost, All Is Yet To Be Found

10 minute powerviolence full length. Music of the 'RAWRAWRBLAST songs done' variety.

Necroblaspheme - Destination: Nulle Part

Death metal. Really good, solid, quality death metal. From France.

Rotten Sound - Cycles

Yeah, I already posted this in the "Best of 08" thing, but I think it got mostly overlooked, which is a shame. Grindcore with discernible riffs, making it much more enjoyable than the typical blasty-blast grind bands. They also aren't afraid to slow the tempo down on occasion. I'm not normally a big fan of breakdowns, but these guys know how to do them right. After a few tracks of blasting, they'll throw a breakdown in and it sounds like the heaviest thing in the world right then.

Rosetta - Wake/Lift

This Philly band was part of the second wave of "post-metal" bands, along with Mouth of the Architect, Minsk, and the like. They took the blueprint developed by Isis, Neurosis, and Cult of Luna, and created their own take on it. This is their second album, which is less heavy than their debut The Galilean Satellites, but more melodic and better written overall. Don't take that to mean this isn't heavy, though; the crescendos in "Red in Tooth and Claw" still makes me want to start breaking things.

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Start A People

New BMSR. It's good, like all BMSR.
Last.fm: "BMSR is a psych-electro group in early-'70s electronic clothing. Sometimes the songs feel like pagan rituals in a sugarcoated fairyland, while at other times they're like sad thoughts on the happiest days."

Irepress - Samus Octology

Instrumental post-rock/metal band from Boston. They switch from spacey type stuff to metal chugging and riffing. This album can be synced up with The Goonies and used as a soundtrack. It's pretty cool to watch.

Cattle Decapitation - The Harvest Floor (for Cortney)

Haven't listened yet. Hopefully it's good.

A Silver Mt. Zion - Horses In The Sky

Canadian post-rock band, part of the Godspeed You! Black Emperor family of side projects. They write sad songs. This is their best work to date, in my opinion.

Fuck the Facts - Disgorge Mexico

Grind/hardcore band with a female singer who sounds just as br00tal as any guy. One of 08's better albums.

Floor - Floor

Torche before Torche existed. You can definitely hear where the ideas for Torche came from on this album, much more so than on their other album, Dove. Heavy, riffy, accessible doom. Iron Girl, Tales of Lolita, and Downed Star will cause the volume level to climb skyward without you even noticing.

Sgt. Sunshine - Sgt. Sunshine

Heavy, happy stoner rock. These guys take the Kyuss playbook and expand upon it. Recommended if you love RIFFS.

Bear vs Shark - Terrorhawk

At the Drive-In + Fugazi + old Modest Mouse = something like this. Michigan band that broke up a few years ago, and are sorely missed. This is one of the few albums from 8th grade that I still listen to, and I actually like it more now than I did then. These guys were the greatness.

Kreator - Hordes of Chaos

This album proves that these old guys are more metal than you will ever be, and can thrash harder than most bands half their age.

Saturday, January 10, 2009

Botch - 061502

One of the most influential bands in hardcore made a CD/DVD of their last show. This is the CD portion of that.

Friday, January 9, 2009

Torche - Torche

For those of you that don't already know. Heavy, riffy, but accessible doom, with former members of Floor. This is their first album. It's not as good as Meanderthal, but it's still the shit.

Thursday, January 8, 2009

Grand Magus - Iron Will

Fist pumping, epic sounding doomy metal with clean vocals. Kinda reminiscent of The Sword both in sound and image (ie riffs aplenty with fantasy battle imagery), except slowed down some and with a singer that can actually sing.

The Lack - The Lack

I don't really have anything to say about this album. They have some elements of industrial, some of hardcore, some of noise, but that doesn't really go far enough to describe it. I can't even find a proper track list, or any info about the band other than that they released this album in 2001 (supposedly) on Troubleman Unlimited (also supposedly). And apparently they haven't released anything else since then, so they're probably broken up now.
So I guess you're just downloading this out of curiosity. And your trust in my impeccable taste, of course.

Black Sheep Wall - I Am God Songs

Slow, dark sludge/hardcore/doom. Much more atmospheric than most bands of this type, but not in an ISIS or Explosions in the Sky way. More like a pre-hiatus Earth, but mixed with Coalesce.

Noneuclid - The Crawling Chaos

Progressive/thrash metal. They walk the borderline between intellectual and pretentious. Either way, once you get past to the somewhat King Diamond-esque vocals, this is a fairly original sounding group with some solid tunes.

Disembodied - If God Only Knew The Rest Were Dead

90s hardcore band with future members of Martyr AD. This is my favorite release by them. Fucking heavy and pissed off.

*stage dives*

Dälek - Gutter Tactics

New Dälek. Haven't listened yet. It's probably really good.

Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days

Fuck you New Years.
I feel like crap. Massive headache, and I feel like I'm constantly on the verge of barfing all over the place.
This album is about as energetic as I can take as far as music goes right now. Basically a guy with an acoustic guitar, occasionally backed up by some percussion and more guitars. Very, very chilled.
He also has an epic beard.
